Contact a translator

OCT

This was the first interaction I had with my translator, Josh Tang. The reason I chose him was because I knew he already had a relationship with The Candyman and would be my best chance of getting in contact with him. I was really happy with his reaction to the description of the documentary and he seemed to be very into executing the plan.

Meeting with translator

15th

The second thing I emailed Josh about was to set up a meeting with him to go over more of the specifics of contacting The Candyman and the dates we should be filming. In the meeting itself, we went over getting his phone contact and the dates that we could both do. We agreed on the Friday 18th from 3:30 to 5:00 and Saturday 19th from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Crew

Capture 7.PNG

I got in contact with the crew I wanted to use. I have worked with Manav before and I know I can trust him to create shots that I will be using in the documentary. Also, he has been next to me through the process so far so he knows what I am aiming for and knows the style I am going for. Josh has also been next to me and we have previously practiced with the sound recording equipment together and I know that he knows how to use it.

Questions for the candyman

I wanted to make sure that we had questions before we met The Candyman, to not take too much time away from him doing his job. I already knew I was going for a lighthearted documentary, so the best plan would to ask positive questions. Also as Josh Tang knows him better than I do, I thought it would be better to ask him for his opinion of the type of questions I should be asking. As he would be asking the questions I wanted to make him comfortable asking all the questions.

Rushes log

OCT

I created a rushes log for my first shoot, so I could start editing and figure out if I need another shoot. I found that basically all of my footage was usable apart for some "boring" shots. This gave me good coverage as I used the Panasonic Lumix GH5 camera to record slow motion shots as it has the option to record in 180 fps for the b-roll. I also used it for one of the angles of the interview. The Sony A7Sii was used to record one of the interview angles and some 24 fps b-roll.

Fixing audio

Unedited audio

Edited audio

While the footage was really good, I had a few problems with the audio, especially the lavaliere microphone. As you can hear in the unedited audio, the interview conversation often peaks and becomes distorted. This is something I definitely had to change.

Documentary translation

Another thing that had to be done before editing the interview was to get a translation of what The Candyman was saying. As he was speaking Cantonese in the interview, I needed to get back in touch with Josh Tang, my translator to discuss how to do so. On the left is the email back from Josh saying that the best option would be to do it in real life and sit down together to do so.
